The IAG EduTour 2025 in the Dominican Republic: A Journey of Insight and Impact

 From December 2–6, MCI Group had the pleasure of hosting the International Assistance Group (IAG) EduTour in the Dominican Republic. A unique, immersive experience that brought together leading professionals in international medical assistance. As organizers and local hosts, we are proud to share that the event was completed successfully, according to plan, and with outstanding engagement from all participants.

From Miami to the Caribbean: A Seamless Experience

The EduTour began in Miami, with a series of high-level discussions and a key site visit to Jackson Memorial Hospital, one of our longstanding partners. From there, the group flew directly to Puerto Plata, visiting our MCI Latam offices kicking off a 5-day itinerary across the Dominican Republic that combined professional insight with cultural immersion.

A Firsthand Look at the Dominican Healthcare System

The tour provided a deep and authentic understanding of the Dominican Republic’s healthcare and logistical response system,  especially as it relates to tourists, expatriates, and digital nomads. Over the course of the week, our group visited:

• Private and public hospitals and clinics in Puerto Plata, Santiago, Las Terrenas, Santo Domingo, and Punta Cana

• Aeroambulancia by Panorama Jets and their air evacuation facilities at La Isabela Airport

• Medical coordination centers and international service providers within our network

Each stop allowed participants to see how the system responds when the unexpected happens, whether it’s a minor illness, a medical emergency, or a complex repatriation case.

Modern Care Meets Historic Roots

During our visit to Santo Domingo, we had the opportunity to explore the ruins of Hospital San Nicolás de Bari, considered the oldest hospital built in the Americas. Originally constructed between 1503 and 1552, the hospital was inspired by European Renaissance architecture, particularly the Hospital of Santo Spirito in Rome.

The complex was built on a cross-shaped plan with two stories, interior courtyards for ventilation and light, and three naves that separated the areas for worship and patient care. A private chapel, now part of the nearby Church of La Altagracia, added a spiritual dimension to the healing environment.

The architectural design combined Gothic and Renaissance styles with Mudéjar elements, typical of 16th-century buildings in the region. Its layout later served as a reference for hospitals across Spanish America, including the Hospital de la Concepción in Mexico, built by Hernán Cortés in 1524.

Though partially in ruins today, the site remains an important symbol of the early development of organized healthcare in the New World and offered valuable historical context during our visit.

Behind the Scenes of Medical Assistance

What made this EduTour truly special was the balance between experiencing the country as a traveler, while gaining a behind-the-scenes perspective on how international patients are supported.

From the moment an incident occurs to the coordination of transport, diagnosis, and specialized care, attendees were able to observe the workflows, resources, and infrastructure that power our assistance ecosystem.

The tour also provided the opportunity to meet with medical professionals, operational teams, and local partners, giving attendees a clear picture of both the clinical and logistical capabilities available throughout the country.

A Stronger Network, A Shared Vision

This EduTour was more than just a professional tour. It was a space to build relationships, share knowledge, and strengthen collaboration across borders. We’re confident that the insight gained this week will help all of us improve the way we serve international patients.
